Challenge: Multiple industries want to make contextual data-driven decisions based on insights from various location data solutions.

With clients from multiple domains, ranging from the Out-Of-Home (OOH) Advertising (e.g. Billboards) to Tourism, and from the Real Estate to Urban Planning industries, Motionworks is working towards enabling their users to directly interact with an industry agnostic map-based platform in order to use insights and visualization from various types of location data (place-based visitation data, advertising-inventory-based data, population-movement-based data, and more) to facilitate their decision making.

Using a Mall Owner as an example, being able to understand visitation data of a single place or a set of places (e.g. a chain of malls) can help answer questions such as:

Who is visiting my mall (e.g. age, occupation, income, etc.)?
When are they are visiting and how long do they stay?
Where are the visitors coming from and where do they go afterwards?
How are the visitors coming to my mall (e.g. transit, routes, etc.)?
• How are my competitors' businesses doing?

The answers to these questions can help a Mall Owner in ways such as:

• Marketing using advertisement inventories (e.g. Billboard) at the optimized places, time, and targeting the most suitable people
• Create new places (e.g. new malls) and analyze potential business outcomes
• Competitive analysis and advantage

Problem: The current insights platform doesn't provide an integrated experience for users to visualize & interact with different location data solutions on the same map.

For example, the Mall Owner is currently not able to use the map-based platform to select his chain of malls (place-based data), then find a list of advertisement inventories (inventory-based data) in close proximity to his malls.

As a contractor, my job is to design a platform that integrates independent analytics and location data solutions (place-based, advertising-inventory-based, population-movement-based), so that users from different domains will have more resources to facilitate their decision-making process and grow their businesses.

Process:

1. Product Discovery + Vision

After leading and facilitating a series of discovery meetings, we documented the following:

Long-Term Vision
• Product Strategy and Business Outcomes
User Stories & Flows for the OOH, Retail & Tourism Industries, and Internal Sales Team

2. Big Ideas - Moodboard

With the long-term vision and a handful of user stories in mind, I looked at over 20 geospatial solutions and competitors and documented the flows of their products for inspiration.

3. Design

I am currently working on the design and exploring the "Data Layers" idea from Remix in order to enable the users to visualize and interact with different data solutions (place-based, inventory-based, etc.) as separate layers on the same map.

I am also taking inspiration from Photoshop, so that the users can easily edit, hide, share, or download data from each layer of insights.
